How do Night Curfews Help at Curbing Covid-19?
According to the scientists, curfews, especially night curfews, are not expected to help curb COVID-19 cases. Then why night curfew is being implemented? One of the reasons could be to give a break to police those who are in charge of and forcing COVID-19 appropriate behavior in the day.
According to the health experts, a curfew is a measure to reduce social gatherings which will help in reducing the spread of COVID-19 Infection. Maria Polyakova an economist at Stanford University said “ assuming that nightclubs are also closed during the night curfews”, this states that night curfew, some way or the other prohibits social gathering, reducing the chance of the infection getting spread.
States that have Imposed Night Curfews to Check COVID-19 Stream
With this pandemic déjà vu in India, several states are imposing curfews to stop the spread of the coronavirus. Let us now look at some states that have imposed night curfews to check the COVID-19 Surge:
Night Curfew in Delhi
After the national capital reached 6799 62 including 14589 active Covid cases, the Delhi government imposed a night curfew on Tuesday with immediate effect till April 30.
Further, Delhi Health Minister Satyender Jain clarified that those who were traveling into the city by trains or flights can continue their journey during the curfew hours by showing their tickets.
Night Curfew in Rajasthan
Rajasthan government issued new guidelines amid the ongoing pandemic. As per the guidelines, there will be a night curfew that will remain in force from 8 PM to 6 AM. Whom delivery of food will be allowed during the curfew hours but dining will be strictly prohibited.
Night Curfew in Maharastra
On April 5, Maharashtra cabinet minister Nawab Malik announced than night curfew that would be in place across the state from 8 PM to 7 AM and a complete lockdown on weekends. However, the Maharashtra government also clarified that essential medical services and transportation will be allowed during the curfew hours.
Night Curfew in Punjab
Punjab Government already issued COVID-19 related restrictions which they extended till 10th April. Under these revised restrictions/guidelines the government has extended the night curfew from 9 to 11 districts including Ludhiana and Patiala, where the number of cases is increasing. According to the guidelines, the curfew will be implemented from 9 PM to 5 Am daily.
There are other states like Odisha in Gujarat where the night curfew and related guidelines have been implemented. And while the Orissa government implemented the night curfew in 10 districts, The Gujarat government extended the night curfew in force in four major cities till 15th April.
