World Youth Skills Day 2021: Theme, History and Significance

In 2014, 15th July was declared as World Youth Skills Day by the United Nations General assembly, to celebrate the importance of young people with skills of employment, entrepreneurship, and decent work. This day highlights the important role of skilled youth in addressing global and current challenges. In this article, we will be looking at the theme, history, and significance of World Youth Skills Day.

History

The United Nations General assembly declared 15 July as world youth skills Day in December 2014.  This day was announced to achieve better socio-economic conditions for the youth and the challenges they face in terms of unemployment.

Theme

The theme of World Youth Skills Day 2021 is Reimagining Youth Skills Post-Pandemic. This day takes place in a challenging context, with the continuation of the COVID-19 pandemic, and resulting in the disruption of the TVET sector.

Significance 

The main significance of World Youth Skills Day is to spread awareness about youth unemployment which is increasing day by day and becoming the most significant problem for today’s economy.

Around 259 million young people in 2016 were classified as NEET (Number of youth not in employment, education, or training), and this number increased year by year to around 273 million in 2021.

The main aim to celebrate World Youth Skills Day on 15th July is to aware public and private sector stakeholders recognize and celebrate the importance of preparing young youth with skills of employment and entrepreneurship.
